  • Royals Make Giants Look Small

giantsThe Series returned to Kansas City tonight – in more ways than one. After three hours and twenty-one minutes of baseball, the Royals shut out San Francisco with ten unanswered runs. Admittedly I felt the Royals would be the underdogs in this contest, but with a fired up hometown crowd, Game 7 will prove to be an extraordinary one.

  • Three degrees of Rob Lowe

robloweThe latest string of DirecTV spots featuring Rob Lowe tap into some scary side effects of an actor who just has cable. Lowe’s personification of each of these characters would not be complete without costume and makeup. For this reason I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some ‘Less Attractive’, ‘Super Creepy’ or ‘Painfully Awkward’ Rob Lowes out and about this Halloween.

  • Homework

backpackIt could be a bit of an exaggeration, but lifting my eldest’s backpack could be considered a rep in cross-training. Since the new high school policy — if you’re not a freshman — is ‘you don’t get a locker unless you request one’ he’s essentially lugging his locker on his back to every class.

  • Dreamers

mittyOne of my family’s favorite movies of late would have to be Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Aside from a catchy soundtrack, the story is inspiring and motivational. I think one of the central themes of the film is that it’s okay to dream, but until you start moving forward with a plan to accomplish your dreams, that’s all they’ll ever be.

  • Gored Gourds

carverOnce the pumpkins are gutted, everyone craves the carve. We have four orange canvases that will be creatively transformed at some point this week. Every year I aspire to create something more Ray Villafane, but end up with a standard, three-holed lantern with a slightly unpleasant expression.

  • Royals Come Alive

If there were any doubts about whether or not Kansas City belonged in the World Series, Game Two was the litmus test. The Royals erupted last night in a 7-2 victory over San Francisco. The score was stalled at 2-2 going into the bottom of the sixth when a string of KC hits by Butler and Perez brought in three more runs. The nail in the Giants’ coffin was Omar Infante’s monster two run homer in the bottom of the sixth. We’ll see if the Royals can bring some of that mojo to San Fran on Friday night.

  • Giants’ Hunter Pence crushes Royals at Home

giants-royalsKansas City hosted the San Francisco Giants in game one of the 2014 World Series last night. It didn’t take long for the Giants to dominate with an early 3-0 lead thanks to a deep center two-run dinger by Hunter Pence. The Royals struggled to take control defensively digging four arms deep into their bullpen. Seeing extra innings was common in the division series, but it only took nine to put KC out of their misery. Hopefully the Royals can mount a comeback in game two.

  • Zoinks!

Believe it or not, Hanna-Barbera did an anti-drug PSA in the 1970s. The overall vibe was very groovy and ‘Scooby-Doo-like’ –  right down to the trumpeted outro. No trademarked characters were used in the piece, but the intent was to warn their primary audience about the dangers of drug use. Imagine how powerful a Scooby-Doo PSA for childhood obesity would be if it actually featured Shaggy and Scooby.

  • Chemistry

Aside from the fact that we both have four letters in our first name and about the same hairline, I have very little in common with Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. Just like my wife has nothing really in common with Claire. And there’s really no need to ask about it, either. We have special chemistry.

  • Hermanstein

hermanI wonder if Boris Karloff was miffed when The Munsters debuted way back in 1964. Fred Gywnne’s characterization of the lovable and playful nitwit Herman Munster pretty much made a punchline out of the macabre image of Frankenstein’s monster that was a standard in horror for some 30 years. Thank goodness Karloff never lived to see Franken-Berry.
